FAQs

What are Serum 2 presets?

Serum 2 presets are pre-designed sound patches for Xfer Records' Serum 2 synthesizer. Each preset is a complete sound (a bass, lead, pluck, pad, or effect) ready to drop into your track. Instead of building sounds from scratch, you can load a preset and start producing immediately, then customize it with Serum 2's macros and modulation tools to fit your song.

Do these presets work with Serum 1, or do I need Serum 2?

It depends on the pack. Many packs include both Serum 1 and Serum 2 versions of every preset, so you can use them whether you're on the original Serum or upgraded to Serum 2. Packs released after Serum 2 was introduced are Serum 2 only because they use features exclusive to the new version. Each product page lists the exact compatibility.

How do I install Serum 2 presets?

After purchase, you'll get an instant download link. Unzip the file, then in Serum 2 click the menu icon, select "Import Preset Pack," and choose the .SerumPack file. For traditional preset folders, drop them into your Serum 2 presets folder. Full installation instructions are included with every download.

Can I preview the presets before buying?

Yes, every product page includes audio previews so you can hear the presets before purchasing. Listen through the full demo to get a sense of the basses, leads, and synths included in each pack.

Are the presets royalty-free?

Yes. Once you purchase a pack, the presets are yours to use in any production, commercial or personal, with no royalty obligations. You can release tracks made with these presets on any label or platform.

Do the packs include MIDI files?

Most packs include matching MIDI files for the presets. Each MIDI file shows you how the preset is meant to be played in context, so you can hear the sound in a musical phrase right away and use it as a starting point for your own ideas.

A couple of earlier released packs don't include MIDI; the product page for each pack lists exactly what's included.

Can I use the MIDI files in my own released tracks?

The MIDI files in these packs are designed as reference and learning tools. They're inspired by released songs from top artists, so they're meant to help you understand how those producers structure their basslines, melodies, and chord progressions.

Because of this, I recommend using the MIDI files for study and inspiration rather than copying them directly into tracks you plan to release commercially. The Serum presets themselves are 100% royalty-free and yours to use in any production. It's just the MIDI patterns that are best used as a starting point you build your own ideas on top of.
